KITTERY, Maine — Andrew Ward is going to be adopting his foster son Wednesday. The celebratory mood, however, will be tempered by the fact that Ward was furloughed from his job at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery on Tuesday.
Ward is one of as many as 2,800 workers at the shipyard who came to work Tuesday, only to clean out their desks and head back home.
“It’s awful, no matter what happens,” said Ward, a Wells resident.
A steady stream of cars passed through Gate 1 Tuesday morning, as workers flooded out of the shipyard. A number yelled words like, “This su***” or “Obama stinks” as they passed.
