PORTLAND, Maine — A woman was killed Sunday evening when she was struck by a pickup truck on the Maine Turnpike, according to police.

Aeriel Rodriguez, 24, of Kittery had pulled into the breakdown lane due to a flat tire and was attempting to flag down another vehicle when she was hit, according to Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.

The accident took place in the southbound lanes around 7:15 p.m. near the Falmouth-Portland town line, McCausland said.

The driver of the pickup, Michael Hawk, 42, of Lewiston, was not injured and was not charged, McCausland said.

The accident closed the turnpike’s southbound lanes for about two hours.
