CASTINE – Robert Matthew Daly, 81, passed away Monday, Sept. 23, 2013, at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was born May 26, 1932, in Jersey City, N.J., to Matthew Daly and Grace (Buickerwod) Daly.
Robert leaves his wife, Sharlene (Spinazola) Daly formerly of Massachusetts. He was brother to Kaye Howell, Betsy Graff, the late Jack Daly, and the late June Minarik, all of New Jersey.
Mr. Daly graduated from Lodi High School, Lodi, N.J., in 1950 where he was a member of the National Honor Society. He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years, stationed in Korea as a Staff Sargent. He received a bachelor’s of science degree in electrical engineering, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1959 from Michigan State University. Robert attended Newark College of Engineering and received a Master’s Degree in electrical engineering from UCLA. He also majored in statistics at MIT, Cambridge, Mass.
Mr. Daly was employed as an engineer at Raytheon Company in Massachusetts and served as Program Manager of the Hawk and Patriot Missile projects.
He resided in Holliston, Mass., for many years where he was a little league coach and awarded for outstanding service. He also lived in Milford, Mass., and retired to Castine, in 1994. Robert was a member of the Castine Golf Club; winning the Hubbard Cup Championship in 2006. He was also an avid bridge player in Castine. After becoming certified in the Project Seed Program at Northeastern University, Boston, Mr. Daly was a mathematics tutor to local students.
Robert leaves his children, Stephen Daly of California, Lisa Mitchell of Arizona, Peter Daly of Massachusetts, and Laura Cota of California; along with his granddaughters, Kimberly Leco, Shannon Daly, and Alana Daly; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He also leaves his stepdaughter, Karen Smith of Verona Island; and stepgrandson, Evan Smith also of Verona Island.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 30, at Our Lady of Holy Hope Catholic Church, Castine, with Father Bruce Siket as celebrant. A graveside service will be held at Maryrest Cemetery, Mahwah, N.J., at a future date yet to be determined where Robert will be laid to rest.
