Police searching for man they say attempted to rob another man at gunpoint

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

AUGUSTA, Maine — Police are investigating an attempted robbery in the area of Boothby Street on Monday afternoon.

Augusta Deputy Chief Jared Mills said the suspect is a male of Hispanic origin, who was wearing a black sweatshirt and gray pants and attempted to rob another man at gunpoint.

According to witnesses, the robber brandished his weapon and quickly fled, Mills said. Despite initial reports that no one was injured, police on Tuesday said that one person was shot. The shooting victim’s injuries were not life-threatening, police said in a news release.

When police questioned the victim, he apparently did not want to pursue criminal charges against the gunman and was uncooperative with police, according to Mills.

Augusta police and a K9 unit from the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office conducted an intense search for the suspect but could not locate him.

Anybody with information on the gunman’s whereabouts should contact Augusta police Officer Peter Cloutier at 262-2370 ext. 5036.
