BRUNSWICK, Maine — Weeks after Joshua Chamberlain’s original Medal of Honor was turned over to the Pejepscot Historical Society for safe keeping, the public will have an opportunity to view it in October and November.

The U.S. Army Medal of Honor was awarded to Civil War hero Joshua Chamberlain — who would go on to become president of Bowdoin College and governor of Maine — in 1893 for “distinguished gallantry” in the Battle of Gettysburg 30 years earlier.

An anonymous donor gave it to the Brunswick-based Pejepscot Historical Society in August after finding it in the back of a book he’d purchased at a church sale.

Museum officials said at the time that they were confident, after consulting experts at the Maine State Museum, the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian, and the Department of the Army’s Awards and Decorations Branch, that it is the actual medal bestowed on Chamberlain.

The medal will be on view Oct. 9-12 at the society’s headquarters, 159 Park Row, Brunswick. Admission is free to see the medal and the historical society’s exhibit, “Brunswick and the Civil War.”

A special Veterans Day viewing of the medal will be offered Nov. 8-10 at the society’s Joshua L. Chamberlain Museum, 2 Potter St., Brunswick.
