WILTON, Maine — Police are investigating an alleged assault on a woman outside the East Wilton Post Office on Wednesday night.
A man driving past the alleged incident called police at about 8:41 p.m. after he saw another man hit the woman who had a child about 5 years old with her, Wilton officer Derek Daley said. They were on the side of the road outside the post office.
The driver stopped and hollered at the man. The suspect then got into a white Ford Ranger and took off. The driver went to help the woman, and she fled with the child to the Cross Street area.
Sgt. Chad Abbott visited residences along the street but was unable to find the woman, he said. Residents couldn’t identify anyone from the description.
A state police trooper was called in to search Temple Road, Morrison Hill and Voter Hill for the vehicle. Farmington Police searched Route 43 to Wilton, but neither found the vehicle, he said.
The man was described as about 5 feet 5 inches tall and had a full beard. He appeared to be intoxicated. The woman may have suffered a broken nose, Daley said.
Anyone with any information is asked to call the Wilton Police Department at 645-3876.
