Bertha E. (Glidden) Murray

BANGOR – Bertha E. Murray, 87, wife of Norman H. Murray, died Sept. 11, 2013, at a Bangor health care facility. She was born Feb. 11, 1926, in Bangor, daughter of Edwin and Phyllis (Tenan) Glidden.

Bertha worked in woolen mills, laundries and shoe factories in the area. For 49 years of her life she was committed to horse racing. Bertha was a groomer and trainer at the Bangor race track, as well as other tracks around the state. She was a driver in the Powder Puff Races as well. In the 1940s and 1950s Bertha sang, played the stand-up bass and yodeled in her brother, Maurice’s, country band.

Surviving are her brother, Maurice Glidden and his wife, Pam; nieces, Vivian Walls-Patten and her husband, Dwight, and Judy Paul and her husband, Danny; nephews, Lloyd Chaison, Jerry Hughes, Shawn Hughes, Scott Hughes and Chris Hughes.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 16, at Faith Baptist Church, 160 Forest Ave., Orono, where Bertha was a faithful member. Pastor David J. Natale, officiating. Relatives and friends are invited to call 10 a.m. until time of service Monday at the church. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor. A service of Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor.
