WESLEY – Donald F. Nickerson, age 88, passed away on Sept. 9, 2013. He was born on Jan. 21, 1925, in Baileyville, the son of Dorothy (Anderson) and George A. Nickerson.
He was predeceased by both parents, a brother Stanley of Luray, Va., a granddaughter Natalie of Mendon, Mass., a great-granddaughter Aurora Skye and great-grandson Elijah Praise of Grand Rapids, Mich. He is survived by his wife Carola of 67 years, a sister Thelma Nelson of New Sweden, three children, Mark and wife Sally of Grand Rapids, Mich., John and wife Sharon of Yarmouth, Linnea and husband Thane Youngsma of Mendon, Mass., 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
He attended schools in Stockholm, gaining a high school diploma from the University of Maine, Orono. In World War II he served in the 75th and 86th infantry divisions, saw combat in Germany and was wounded in action at Ingolstadt on the Danube. He served from March 1943 till March 1946 and was honorably discharged with the rank of First Sergeant. After active duty he spent 8 years in the Army Reserves with the rank of Master Sergeant. He then spent 34 years in the telephone industry, 14 years in Maine with New England Telephone and Telegraph and 20 years in Alaska with Alascom Inc. Retiring in 1990 he came back to Maine to serve as a volunteer layman in the Wesley Community Church for 14 years.
A memorial service will be held Sept. 22 at 3 p.m. at the Wesley Community Church, Wesley, followed by a supper buffet in the upstairs Fellowship Hall.
