LUBEC – Ukey Santos, age 64, died peacefully from brain cancer on Sept. 7, 2013. He was the youngest of Agnes and Joseph Santo’s five children. The family was raised in Fall River, Mass. After receiving an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy in 1969 he went on to wage peace having become a pacifist.
In his 20s he moved to Masardis. He spent several austral summers in Antarctica, first at the South Pole, then at McMurdo Station. His last tour lasted 14 months. After living in different parts of the country, he settled in Lubec. He was a carpenter, basket and candle maker. He renovated houses in Lubec. Other interests were singing, playing his guitar and ukulele, most especially with the Machias Ukulele Club, and volunteering as a carpenter for the community for the Land Trust, The Land Mark Society and Lubec Chamber of Commerce.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Beard of Lubec; daughter and son-in-law, Barbry and Anthony Mallicone, and their daughters, Sophia and Raquel of Santa Clarita, Calif.; brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Brenda Santos of Phoenix; brother and sister-in-law, Ronnie and Francis Santos of Fall River, Mass., Dolly Andrews of Fort Myers, Fla., and Portland, Tenn.; sister, Shirley McHugh of Fall River, Mass.; and all of his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and stepdaughters. In memory of him give to a cause of your choice, in particular he favored conservation and works for peace, and/or take delight in the people around you.
