MARION, N.C. – Albert Merle Harmon, 93, passed away Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, at The McDowell Hospital. Born May 17, 1920, in Milo, he was the son of the late Pliny and Helen Dickerson Harmon.
Albert enjoyed woodworking and was an avid gardener and retired from American Thread in 1982. He was an U.S. Army veteran having served during World War II, Asiatic-Pacific Theater.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by one grandson, Jason Harmon; four brothers, Woodrow, Winston, George and Cecil Harmon; and one sister, Shirley Ellison. He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Marion Howard Harmon of Marion, N.C.; two sons, Ronald Harmon and wife, Jane, of Bluffton, S.C., and Robert Harmon and wife, Dolores, of Huntersville, N.C.; special nephew, Lee Harmon and wife, Mary, of Houston; five grandchildren, Sara Harmon Self and husband, David, Nicole Harmon, Matthew Harmon, Patrick Harmon and Elizabeth Harmon Daves and husband, Logan; and two great-grandchildren, Blake and Owen Self also survive.
A celebration of life will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, in the Chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ray Davis officiating. A graveside service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery, Milo, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: American Cancer Society, 120 Executive Park No. 1, Asheville, NC 28801.
