ISLAND FALLS, Maine — Three Nova Scotia men were injured in a crash early Monday after the motor home in which they were riding plowed through a guardrail and down an embankment.

Maine State Police Sgt. Josh Haines said in a statement Monday that the accident took place just after 2:30 a.m. on the northbound off ramp at the start of the Island Falls construction detour off Interstate 95 in Island Falls.

Edward Smith, 62, of Chester, Nova Scotia, was driving the 1992 Ford motor home northbound on the interstate and had turned off at the Island Falls exit for the construction detour. Haines said that Smith did not slow down or stop at the Route 2 intersection and continued through the guardrail and down a steep embankment coming to rest in the woods. In the vehicle were two passengers, 64-year-old David Pierce and 68-year-old Stephen Daubs, both of Nova Scotia. Two men were trapped inside the vehicle.

The motor home was totaled in the crash. Members of the Island Falls, Oakfield and Houlton ambulance departments assisted at the scene. All three men in the motor home were taken to Houlton Regional Hospital to be treated for unspecified injuries. Updates on their conditions were not available late Monday morning.

Haines and Trooper Jerad Sylvia investigated the crash.
