OXFORD, Maine — New events, contests and entertainment, including renowned country music artist Kenny Rogers, have been added to the already busy slate of things to do at the Oxford County Fair this year.
The fair runs from Wednesday, Sept. 11, through Saturday, Sept. 14, at the fairgrounds on Pottle Street in Oxford.
An expanded educational day, lawn mower and ATV pulls, and a petting zoo are some of the events being added to the fair this year, Jackie Young, the Oxford County Agricultural Society president, said.
In addition, more local vendors have signed up for booth space this year.
An expanded education day kicks off on Wednesday at the fair, which is “bigger than ever,” Young said, with 90 booths with educational activities for students. The day also includes steer and oxen shows and ends with the popular demolition derby.
Thursday is community day at the fair, with events including youth market lamb judging, the frying pan toss, and a free community snack and meal during the afternoon.
The evening will have live music by Cassie and Maggie MacDonald and Sprag Session, the ATV and lawn mower pull, and fireworks by Central Maine Pyrotechnics.
Woodmen will show off their saw and ax skills in competition on Friday. The youth lamb and beef auction, ever-popular pig scramble and demolition derby, and musical entertainment by Kristen Short, Broken: 51 and and 33 Miles round out the day’s events.
Saturday, Family Fun Day, has the busiest schedule, with a fireman muster, 4-H livestock shows, horse pulling, a pig scramble and a backhoe competition among the many activities scheduled.
The $10 admission for the day also counts as a ticket for the three concerts scheduled for Saturday. At 1 p.m. pop starlet Davina Leone will perform at the Family Fun Field, followed by up-and-coming country artist Caroline Kole at 6:30 p.m. and headliner Kenny Rogers at 8:30 p.m.
Smokey’s Greater Shows will be open on the midway all week along with a plethora of food and drink selections.
Harness racing, with the trackside betting lounge, will start at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Entrance tickets are $5 Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and $10 on Saturday, including admission to the Kenny Rogers concert. Children 5 years old and younger are admitted free.
