ORLAND – Donald Edward Pierce Jr., 60, died, Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at a Bangor hospital. Born April 11, 1953, in Bangor, he was the son of the late Donald E. and Marilyn (Dunbar) Pierce Sr.
Donald married Shelley Johnson Jan. 15, 1977, in Bucksport. He loved being a grandfather and enjoyed working with his tractor. He was an avid New York sports fan, which included the Giants and the Yankee’s. He started Sunrise Transportation in 1984 and owned and operated it until 1993, when he sold it to Laidlaw Transportation. He continued working at Laidlaw Transportation until 2003. In 2004 he worked at Baxter State Park and from 2004 to 2006 he was a district manager for the Bangor Daily News. In the past he had been on the Orland School Board and coached the Searsport Viking’s basketball team.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Shelley of Orland; two children, Matthew Pierce and his wife, Michelle, of Orland and Melissa Osborne and her husband, Michael, of Bucksport; one grandson, his pride and joy, Chase Pierce of Orland; two sisters, Donalyn Pierce of Orland and Joyce Rogerson of Bucksport; uncle and aunt, Clayton Pierce and his wife, Joanne, of Orland; sister-in-law, Marilyn Daigle and her husband, Michael, of Lewiston; brother-in-law, Robert Johnson and his wife, Linn, of Lapine, Ore.; along with many nieces and nephews. Donald was predeceased by his parents; and sister, Barbara Gray.
Donations preferred in Donald’s memory to the Lung Cancer Alliance, P.O. Box 418372, Boston, MA, 02241-8372. There will be no visiting hours. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport, with the Rev. Peter Remick officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, Orland. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home.
