GREENBUSH, Maine — A local man driving a car that crashed Friday night into a tree on the Greenfield Road, trapping him inside, died at the scene as emergency responders tried to free him from the crushed vehicle, police say.

Larry Leighton, 68, crashed his Pontiac Sunfire at about 9:20 p.m., Deputy Chief Troy Morton of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday.

“He was traveling north on Greenfield Road, in the area of Applebee’s store when he crossed over the southbound lane and left the roadway and struck a tree,” Morton said. “He was not ejected and he was not wearing a seat belt.”

Greenbush Fire Department, assisted by Old Town, got Leighton out of the vehicle, but he died at the scene.

The deputy chief said Deputy Will Sheehan is handling the case.
