UMaine announces basketball schedules; league games in Bangor

ORONO, Maine — The final details have not been worked out, but the University of Maine’s basketball teams will be playing most of their America East home games at the new Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

The 2013-2014 schedules for the Black Bear men’s and women’s teams were released Thursday. Coach Richard Barron’s UMaine women have six nonleague home games on their schedule, while the men’s squad coached by Ted Woodward has five nonleague home contests.

UMaine athletics director Steve Abbott said Friday all but one of UMaine’s 16 total men’s and women’s America East home games are penciled in for the Cross Insurance Center. He said the sites for the nonconference games are still being worked out, but there will be some on campus and some in Bangor.

Abbott said UMaine and Global Spectrum, which is managing the Cross Center, are expected to announce their arrangement next week.

“We have an agreement,” Abbott said via text message. “[There are] details to be worked out.”

UMaine’s nonconference schedules rely significantly on games against other New England schools.

The men play home games against NAIA Division II squad Fisher College of Boston, along with New Jersey Tech (as part of a home-and-home arrangement), Quinnipiac, Dartmouth and Army. The Black Bears play four of their first six games and five of their first nine at home.

The men’s nonleague opponents include Rhode Island of the Atlantic 10, George Washington of the Colonial Athletic Association and perennial national power Connecticut of the Big East and A-10 member Providence. UMaine also plays in a post-Christmas tournament at Chattanooga, Tenn., meeting host Middle Tennessee and an opponent to be determined.

The Bears, who were 11-19 overall (6-10 America East) last season, get started Oct. 26 with an exhibition game against McGill University of Montreal.

Woodward’s revamped roster consists of eight returnees, a contingent led by junior point guard Xavier Pollard. UMaine also has brought in six new players, among them Garet Beal, a versatile freshman out of Jonesport-Beals High School.

Among the schedule highlights for the UMaine women is the return of their Thanksgiving tournament, which was not held last season. The Bears will take on Massachusetts of the A-10 and either William & Mary of the CAA or Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Other nonleague home games will bring North Dakota State, Bryant and Yale of the Ivy League to Greater Bangor.

The women face nonconference road contests against Long Island and Syracuse of the Atlantic Coast Conference. They will take on Brown and either Morgan State or Fairfield in the Brown Classic, then meet Northeastern of the CAA, Sacred Heart and a return trip to Wisconsin-Green Bay.

UMaine, which had a 4-24 mark last season (3-12 AE), tips off with exhibition games against the University of New Brunswick (Nov. 2) and Division III University of Southern Maine (Nov. 11).

Coach Barron welcomes back 10 veterans, including senior guard Ashleigh Roberts, along with three newcomers. Among the freshmen is former Stearns High of Millinocket star Sigi Koizar.
