CANTON, Maine — A Dixfield couple was killed Thursday afternoon when their car veered into the path of a dump truck at the town center, according to police.

Howard Child, 73, and his wife, Carrie Child, 75, were killed instantly about 1 p.m. when the Subaru Legacy he was driving crossed the centerline on Route 108 and drove into the path of an International dump truck owned by Crane Brothers of Canton, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said in a press release.

James Bagley, 66, of St. Albans was operating the dump truck and was uninjured, McCausland said.

The head-on collision took place on a slight curve in the roadway, he said.

The Subaru was headed west, toward Dixfield, at the time of the crash.
