College roundup: UM-Fort Kent men’s soccer team rolls to 8-0 victory over PEI college

FORT KENT, Maine — Freshman forward Ben Kluvers scored three goals and added an assist to lead the University of Maine-Fort Kent men’s soccer team to an 8-0 victory over Holland College of Prince Edward Island Monday to win the UMFK Soccer Labor Day Weekend Classic.

The Bengals scored just 54 seconds into the game as Ross Downie knocked home a Kluvers cross.

Kluvers then scored the final two goals of the first half and the first of the second half to put the Bengals up 4-0.

Junior forward Kennard Brown added a goal and two assists and junior forward Willie Monthe scored the final two goals.

UMFK is now 2-0 and Holland is 1-2.

Women’s soccer

At Fort Kent, Katherine Ferland and Ariane Laberge-Pelletier scored two goals each to carry the UMaine-Fort Kent women’s soccer team to an UMFK Soccer Labor Day Weekend Classic win over Holland College of Prince Edward Island.

Ferland opened the scoring in the fourth minute, converting a penalty kick. Laberge-Pelletier then struck twice in a three-minute span to close the first half. Ferland closed the scoring 10 minutes into the second half, beating keeper Emma Kelly low.

Kayla Richards finished the day with two assists and freshman forward Safiya Atkinson added an assist.

UMFK outshot Holland 11-4. UMFK is now 2-0 and Holland is 2-1.
