Champion the Cure Challenge in Brewer sets fundraising, participation records

An estimated 1600 people walked, ran, biked or rode their way out of the winding entry to the Lafayette Cancer Center on Dirigo Drive in Brewer, Maine, taking part in the Champion The Cure Challenge organized by EMMC Saturday, August 17, 2013.

BREWER, Maine — The Champion the Cure Challenge celebrated a record-breaking year from a participation and fundraising standpoint.

The challenge, which raises money for cancer research, fielded more than 1,500 participants while more than $462,500 was raised, according to the Eastern Maine Medical Center Foundation.

The event features a 1K walk, 5K and 10K walks and runs; 25-, 50- and 100-mile bicycle rides and a 50-mile motorcycle ride.

The Champion the Cure challenge, held annually since 2010, has raised more than $1.15 million to benefit cancer research at Eastern Maine Medical Center.
