FALMOUTH, Maine — A Westbrook woman who had just finished fixing a flat tire was lucky to escape major injury Wednesday after a collision on the Maine Turnpike.

Wanda Brochu, 73, was pulling back onto the highway’s northbound lanes when she was struck by a pickup truck, according to Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.

The pickup’s driver’s name was not released.

The accident was reported around 10:30 a.m., according to McCausland, and northbound traffic was rerouted to Exit 53, just south of the scene, the state police spokesman said.

Firefighters used the jaws of life to free Brochu from her totaled car, McCausland said. She was transported to Maine Medical Center with injuries not considered life threatening.

The northbound lanes were shut down for approximately three hours while crews worked at the scene, McCausland said.

State Police are urging drivers to use caution when merging into traffic from the shoulder of the highway.
