Barclaycard to expand Wilton call center by 200 jobs

AUGUSTA, Maine — Gov. Paul LePage on Tuesday welcomed the planned expansion of a call center in Wilton that will mean 200 additional jobs in Franklin County.

Barclaycard — the U.S. credit card business of British multinational banking and financial service behemoth Barclays — announced Tuesday that it will add 100 new employees by the end of the year at the Wilton facility, and another 100 by the end of 2014. That will bring total employment at the call center to 350.

“Our Maine colleagues have fantastic experience in various service industries and are quick learners who appreciate all our company has to offer, and that’s why we’re expanding here. They are great people,” said Barclaycard COO Patrick Wright during a news conference with the governor in the State House Hall of Flags.

The call center provides customer service to customers who hold one of 40 different credit cards co-branded by Barclaycard and other partners, including L.L. Bean and Travelocity.

LePage and Wright both stressed that the expansion in Wilton means more “good jobs” for Mainers, but Wright declined to provide details about the pay scale for the call center employees. He stressed that each employee receives health, dental and vision benefits, as well as a company-matched 401(k) retirement plan.

Indeed.com, the top job listing site in the U.S., lists the average call center agent salary at about $30,000 per year.

LePage used the announcement as a chance to urge cooperation from the Legislature in realizing his policy goals to improve Maine’s business climate, including cutting taxes and decreasing government spending. He referred to the second floor of the State House, which holds the governor’s office, and the third floor, which houses the Legislature.

“We’d like to see announcements like this every day, and we could, if and only if the second floor and the third floor work much closer together,” he said.

The Wilton call center opened in 2008.
