FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Tim Tebow is still a member of the New England Patriots — at least for one more day.

The Patriots released five players on Monday and made moves on four other players to get down to 77 players on their active roster.

They still have to make two moves to get down to the limit of 75 by Tuesday’s deadline.

The final roster cut comes after the fourth exhibition game later this week.

There was speculation about whether Tebow would make the Patriots’ roster after not seeing any playing time in their most recent preseason game. For now, he’s still on the team.

Tebow’s last chance to prove himself may come in Thursday’s final preseason game.

“(It’s) the same as any other game I’ve ever played in,” ebow said, according to the Boston Herald. “(You) focus not even on that game, but on preparing for that game.”

The most prominent player cut by the Patriots was nine-year NFL linebacker Niko Koutouvides. He played in 14 regular-season games for the Patriots last season, but did not make any starts.

Also released were wide receiver Kamar Aiken, rookie cornerback Brandon Jones, cornerback LeQuan Lewis and rookie long snapper Mike Zupancic.

In other moves, the Patriots placed rookie defensive lineman Cory Grissom and tackle Markus Zusevics on injured reserve, and they put defensive lineman Armond Armstead and wide receiver Mark Harrison on the reserve/non-football injury list.

Saints’ Smith out for year

New Orleans Saints linebacker Will Smith is out for the year with a knee injury, according to Pro Football Talk.

Smith was injured during Sunday’s preseason game against the Houston Texans.

The exact injury was not immediately known.

Without Smith, it will be much more difficult for first-year defensive coordinator Rob Ryan to install an effect 3-4 defense. The team is also without linebacker Victor Butler, who is on the physically unable to perform list after having offseason ACL surgery.

Smith had 58 tackles and six sacks in 2012.

Smith, a first-round pick in 2004, was preparing to move from defensive end in the 4-3 alignment to outside linebacker in the 3-4.

Martez Wilson is likely the fill-in for Smith. Wilson recently returned to practice after injuring an elbow early in training camp.
