Friends of the library elects new board members

BANGOR, Maine — The Friends of the Library met Aug. 15 to pay tribute to the retiring members of its board and to elect new officers and directors.

“We would not be able to fund some of our special programs without the hard work of the Friends,” said Barbara McDade, director of Bangor Public Library. “They work tirelessly in support of the library, they volunteer many hours and they fundraise for added services. We cannot thank them enough for all they do.”

The new board members are President Kurt Keef, Vice President Gerry Palmer, Treasurer Wayne Mallar and Clerk Nick Stahl. This board replaces out-going President Ginger Graham, Vice President Kurt Keef and Treasurer-Clerk Bill Sullivan. The new directors are Kurt Keef, Gerry Palmer, Wayne Mallar, Nick Stahl, Roger Phipps, Jessica Sleeth, Bill Deering, Francine Wickes, Jane Burger, Jim Bishop, Diana Weddell, Bill Sullivan and Ginger Graham. Returning directors are Jules Arel and Carol Harriman.

The Friends of the Library and the Bangor Public Library staff want to express their gratitude to Bill Sullivan. Sullivan has supported the library from 1993 to 2005 as a member of the board of managers and trustees of the library, where he has served as treasurer and a member of the finance committee. Sullivan is described as a “mover and shaker” on the Friends of the Library board since the friends group was founded in 1992.

During his years of service, the library has undergone many changes, including the expansion and renovation of the building, changes in library service with the incorporation of computers, and the many advances in telecommunications. Sullivan served as chairman of the planning committee during the renovation and expansion of the building in 1997, helping draft policies for Internet and public computer use, working with the Friends of the Library, and advocating for library support on both the state and local levels.
