Winston wins Florida State QB job

Posted Aug. 23, 2013, at 9:18 p.m.

In a move that surprised virtually no one, Florida State coach Jim Fisher announced Friday that Jameis Winston has won the quarterback competition and will be the Seminoles’ starter in their season-opener against Pittsburgh on Labor Day.

Winston succeeds last year’s starter EJ Manuel, a member of the Buffalo Bills and the only quarterback taken in the first round of this year’s NFL Draft.

Winston had been given the majority of the snaps with the first-team offense throughout training camp as he competed for the starting job with Jacob Coker.

The transfer of Clint Trickett to West Virginia reduced what had been a three-player quarterback competition down to two. But Winston seemed to take control of the job in spring practice.

Winston is a redshirt freshman who has never played in a college game, but he was a highly rated dual-threat quarterback coming out of high school.

Winston is also a talented baseball player, spending time last spring as a relief pitcher and outfielder on the Florida State baseball team.

He found time to be the star of the spring football game, completing 12 of 15 passes for 205 yards.

Murray to transer from OSU

Ohio State defensive back Najee Murray has been granted his request to be released from his scholarship.

ElevenWarriors.com was first to report earlier this month that Murray was leaving the school, but coach Urban Meyer only said at the time that the sophomore was indefinitely suspended.

Murray spent the first half of the season — mainly on special teams — before a knee injury ended his season in October. He had three tackles last year as a freshman.

Rudock named Iowa QB

Redshirt sophomore Jake Rudock was named Iowa’s starting quarterback for the Hawkeyes’ opener against Northern Illinois.

Coach Kirk Ferentz made the announcement after Rudock beat out Cody Sokol and C.J. Beathard for the starting job.

“All three returning quarterbacks have competed well and improved in each phase of our preseason camp,” Ferentz said on Iowa’s official Twitter account. “We plan to start Jake in our season opener, and we are all confident he will do a quality job.”

Mountaineers suspend Price

Appalachian State has suspended Southern Conference freshman of the year Sean Price for an “undetermined number of games.”

Price, who caught 81 passes for 1,196 yards last season in only 10 games, was arrested on charges of being intoxicated and disruptive on Sunday by Boone, N.C., police.

Price also was suspended last season and missed two games, Fox Sports reported. Yet, he still set FCS single-season records for a freshman. Price was named to the Walter Payton Award Watch List in July.
