BAR HARBOR – Mary “Muff” Ellen McAllister, died Aug. 20, 2013, at an Ellsworth health care facility. She was born Feb. 18, 1929, in Danville, Pa., a daughter of William Donald and Beatrice Evans (Pursel) Vannan.
Mary attended Goucher College in Maryland for two years, and then transferred to Penn State University at State College in Pa., where she met Stuart A. McAllister. They were married soon after. She graduated with a degree in English and Communications. Muff later attended Princeton Seminary, Princeton, N.J., where she received her Master’s in Religious Education. Muff did lay ministry in Pakistan and upon returning home she taught at Sterling College, Kan. She also taught at Boggs Academy, Georgia and Stetson University, Deland, Fla. Muff was later asked to be a board member at Stetson University in their school of music. Muff was active in the Presbyterian Church, a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Deland, Fla., and an associate member of the Somesville Union Meeting House, Mount Desert.
She is survived by sons, Timothy E. McAllister and wife, Beth, of Waban, Mass., Scott McAllister of Hulls Cove, and Mark D. McAllister and wife, Mary Ann, of Ellicott City, Md.; daughter, Ann M. Collins and husband, Peter, of Shrewsbury, Mass.; grandchildren, Katherine A., Cameron A., Keria E., Adele A., Theodore V. McAllister, Tyler C., James A., and Jessica L. Collins; and brother, Donald A. Vannan and wife, Susan. She was predeceased by her husband, Stuart A. McAllister on July 19, 2009; and brother, William Vannan.
