FORT KENT and AUGUSTA – Raymond Steichen, 74, died unexpectedly Aug. 20, 2013, at a Presque Isle health care facility. He was born March 9, 1939, in Tipton, Kan., the son of Eugene and Teresa (Becker) Steichen.
Ray was a member of the Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council No. 0352, the American Legion Martin-Klein Post No. 0133 and the VFW Lozier O’Grady Post No. 9609 all of Fort Kent.
Ray’s favorite past time was reading and doing cross word puzzles, He also enjoyed his flowers.
Ray served in the U.S. Air Force from 1957 to 1977, stationed at Loring AFB in Limestone, France, Guam, Thailand, Louisiana and Kansas. He retired from Loring Air Force Base in October 1977. He was a mentor to many of the young men in the Air Force. He worked at Pinkham Lumber Mill before retiring due to poor health issues and moved to Wallagrass to return to the farm life he loved and to be near his in-laws. After retirement, Ray volunteered many hours at the Greater Fort Kent Ecumenical Food Pantry and with furniture donation and delivery to those in need.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Phyllis (Lizotte) Steichen of Fort Kent; three children, Bruce Steichen of Limestone, Elaine and husband, Joel Swimm, of Fayette and Tina Steichen and husband, Scott Smith, of Standish; four grandchildren, Olivia and Anna Swimm, and Danae and Helena Steichen-Smith; seven siblings, Crescentia Gasper, Mary Ann Thummel, Helena Gasper, and Caroline Ellenz all of Tipton, Kan., Charles Steichen of Placentia, Calif., Loretta Gaunt of Landsdale, Pa., and Eileen Steichen of Oroville, Wash.; and nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Eugene Steichen; and a sister, Margaret Brummer.
