AUGUSTA, Maine — Vice President Joe Biden, the marquee guest at a fundraiser planned Thursday in York for Democratic New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan, will not attend, according to the Hassan campaign.
Biden had to cancel because his son, Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden, “is experiencing some health issues and is in the hospital in Houston,” said a campaign staffer Wednesday. “The vice president has actually been down there a couple days.”
The younger Biden is undergoing tests after suffering a stroke three weeks ago, according to media reports.
Hassan is running for re-election next year, and the fundraiser was scheduled to take place at the York home of lobbyist James Demers, hosted by former Maine Gov. John Baldacci and Maine lobbyist Severin Beliveau.
Climate change activists had planned to rally outside the fundraiser to pressure Biden to oppose the Keystone XL Pipeline project, and the shipment of “tar sands” oil through the Portland-Montreal Pipeline. Organizers have canceled the rally because of Biden’s changed plans.
Biden was also scheduled to attend events Thursday in Rhode Island, which have also been canceled, according to published reports.
