BRUNSWICK, Maine — Police say they will not file charges against a Windham man who fell asleep at the wheel and rolled an 18-wheeler Tuesday morning on Route 1.

Witnesses reported that prior to the crash at 6:15 a.m., a tractor-trailer driven by 34-year-old Bruce Merrill was weaving all over the road, according to Deputy Chief Marc Hagan of the Brunswick Police Department.

Merrill, who is employed by Hutchins Trucking and driving for Hannaford, was traveling from Rockland, Hagan said, when he rolled the empty 2007 Volvo tractor-trailer, rupturing the fuel tank and spilling 30 gallons of fuel.

He was treated for minor injuries at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

Traffic on the highway and in the Cook’s Corner area of Brunswick was disrupted for hours as a result of the crash.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection, Maine Department of Transportation and Maine State Police responded.
