Former Maranacook High School basketball standout Ryan Martin and former University of Maine guard Raheem Singleton were two of the 30 players selected in the National Basketball League of Canada draft Monday.

Martin was selected 19th overall by the Island Storm of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, while Singleton was picked 10th by defending Canadian champion, the London (Ontario) Lightning.

Martin, a three-time Bangor Daily News All-Maine selection, is a 5-foot-9 guard who helped his team from Readfield win Class B state championships in 2006 and 2008. He averaged 23.7 points per game as a senior en route to 1,899 career points.

Singleton was one of 30 players to be selected in the draft and one of three players headed to the Lightning. The first overall selection, Alex Johnson, graduated from North Carolina State after the 2011-12 season and was the first native Canadian to be the selected as the top overall pick.

“We were really emphasizing on trying to a find a guy that has strength, toughness and can play defense, and we think we got three guys that probably those are the best attributes in all three guys,” said Lightning general manager Taylor Brown to the London Community News.

Singleton finished his UMaine career averaging 8.19 points per game, 3.54 assists per contest and shooting .404 from the floor in 59 games. He graduated in 2012 with a degree in childhood and family studies.
