BRUNSWICK, Maine — A Pittsfield woman faces a charge of Class B forgery after police say she attempted to cash a fraudulent check for $75,000 in Brunswick.

Jennifer Church, 27, was arrested at ACE Cash Express on Pleasant Street just after 3 p.m. Friday, Brunswick Police Officer Patrick Mahar said Tuesday.

Mahar said Church communicated with someone on the Internet who sent her the check, drawn on the account of a man from Atlanta, Ga.

Due to the amount of the check, the clerk called the manager, who contacted the Atlanta man and found out the check was not authentic, Mahar said. The man had already been alerted that his account had been compromised.

Church was released on personal recognizance bail from the Brunswick Police Station. Her court date was not immediately available.
