Louis Pepin

MANCHESTER – Louis Pepin, 84, died Thursday, Aug., 15, 2013, at Maine VA Togus Hospice after 17 years on renal dialysis, which he faced with dignity, grace and good humor. He was born in Augusta, the son of the late Albert and Agnes (Cyr) Pepin.
Lou graduated from Cony High School in 1948. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Trieste, Italy, for three years. He was discharged from the Army in 1952, attended Maine Central Institute for one year and then graduated from University of Maine Orono in 1957. While attending UMO he married Marlene Jane Berry. They had two sons, Eric and Carl.
Lou was employed by the Social Security Administration in various capacities in Massachusetts and Maine. His last assignment before retirement in 1992 was District Manager of Social Security in Augusta, Rockland and Waterville.
In 1995, he married Doris Pelletier and moved from Gardiner to Manchester.
He had a gift for viewing life in a positive way and often was heard to say, “I regard dialysis as a part-time job, 12 hours a week.” In times of hardship, one would rarely see him without a smile. He enjoyed being surrounded by those he loved and the many who loved him. He was well known for his interest in people and, although he had many friends, he was always on the lookout for new ones. He was an avid reader and loved the game of golf and his Boston Red Sox.
Lou served as a volunteer at Spectrum Generations for 18 years. He was a member of Augusta Kiwanis Club for 35 years, and was a life long member of the American Legion as well as a member of National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He delighted in organizing a small group for breakfast or lunch and thoroughly enjoyed his monthly coffee gathering with special friends where many a story was told.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. Pathak and to the dialysis and hospice units at Togus VA.
Lou was predeceased by his first wife, Jane; two sisters; and a few cousins.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Pelletier of Manchester; his two sons, Eric and wife, Emily, of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Carl and ex-wife, Karen, of Gardiner; a granddaughter, Allyce, of Augusta; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Paul and Avril Marin of Madawaska.
Friends and relatives may visit 6-8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.
