Wells man accused of grabbing undercover officer’s groin

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

KENNEBUNK, Maine — A Wells man was arrested Tuesday during an undercover operation in which an undercover officer’s genitals were grabbed, police said.

Dana Smail, 62, is facing a charge of unlawful sexual contact, according to a release from Kennebunk police.

Smail is the second man to be arrested this month during an undercover operation at the Roger’s Pond rest area or York Street rest area.

On Aug. 1, Dean Bushey, 67, of Ogunquit was arrested at the York Street rest area.

Police have been performing undercover operations at both areas in the wake of lewd and suspicious behavior taking place.

Smail was having a conversation with an undercover officer when at one point he grabbed the officer’s groin area through his clothing, the release states.

Tuesday’s arrest is the latest in a string of similar crimes in southern Maine.

Saco police made arrests in two cases in May in which men made unwanted advances on undercover police at Cascade Park. They include one in which an Old Orchard Beach man allegedly grabbed an officer’s groin through his pants and asked, “Are we doing this?”

Smail is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 9.

Correction: An earlier version of this story requires correction. On Aug. 1, Dean, not Daniel, Bushey, 67, of Ogunquit was arrested at the York Street rest area
