UNITY, Maine — A convicted sex offender was arrested last week at his Hunter Road home after allegedly ramming his girlfriend’s Volkswagen Beetle with his vehicle in what police describe as an alcohol-fueled jealous rage.
Derek Wilson, 32, of Unity had been home drinking the night of Friday, Aug. 9, when he got it into his head that his girlfriend was cheating on him, according to Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office. When the woman arrived home, police said that Wilson was waiting for her in the driveway in his own vehicle.
“He rammed her car, smashed it and set off the airbag,” Trafton said Friday.
Although the alleged assault happened last week, police did not release information about it until Friday.
Trafton said that the terrified woman ran away from Wilson, wearing only one shoe as she escaped her badly damaged newer-model Volkswagen Beetle and went to the neighbor’s house for help. There, the neighbor convinced her she should call the police. The woman, who is not being named because she is considered a victim, was not physically injured in the crash, he said.
Wilson also called police dispatchers to report that he had been in an accident, according to reports.
“But when they investigated, they found that what really happened was that he got angry and rammed her, causing severe damage to the vehicle,” Trafton said.
Wilson, who previously had been convicted in Skowhegan Superior Court of committing gross sexual assault in 2002, was arrested and charged with domestic violence assault, operating under the influence, domestic violence reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon and driving to endanger.
His bail was set at $20,000 cash or $50,000 surety, and he was released on Aug. 13 after posting the surety, an official from Waldo County Jail in Belfast said Friday afternoon.
