BREWER, Maine — A device that appeared to be a hand grenade required evacuation of Brewer’s school administration building Wednesday morning, according to police.
Employees at the building at the former Brewer Middle School contacted police at 11:15 a.m. when an item that looked like explosives was found on a ramp right outside the building, Brewer police Capt. Chris Martin said.
Police arrived and swiftly evacuated the building, according to Martin, along with residents in the surrounding area.
Once the area was secure, the Bangor Police Department’s bomb squad was called in to identify the device, Martin said.
Using a robot, police were able to handle and inspect the device closer, and Martin said police determined it was a novelty item that resembled a grenade.
The captain added the item was a novelty you can “put something in it that it makes a noise” when thrown.
No injuries were reported in the incident, Martin said, and anyone with information as to who may have put the item on the ramp should call Brewer police at 989-7003.
