BANGOR, Maine — Police have seen an unusually high spike in car burglaries in August as the month reaches its halfway point.

Lt. Paul Edwards said Thursday that 32 vehicle burglaries have been reported since the beginning of the month.

“We’ve had a little spike here in these,” Edwards said.

Most of the incidents have occurred in the East side of town, the lieutenant said, with most burglaries taking place in the tree streets and in the Husson University area.

Edwards said most of the items taken have been small items such as change, but police are encouraging people to be aware of their belongings.

“Keep valuables in the house, or in the trunk if you have to keep them out in the car,” the lieutenant said.
