DAMARISCOTTA, Maine — Five months after demoting the town’s former police chief to deputy chief, Damariscotta has hired former Lincolnville chief Ronald Young to head its police department.

Young will officially begin his new post on Sept. 3, subject to approval Wednesday night by the Damariscotta Board of Selectmen. Town Manager Matt Lutkus said selectmen “are all very excited about Ron starting here.”

Young was police chief in Lincolnville from 2008 until earlier this summer, when the town dissolved its police agency. Prior to that, he was a patrol officer in Belfast and with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department in California.

Lutkus said Young’s experience as a chief in a small Maine town and his interpersonal skills made him the lead contender. Lutkus also praised Young for his focus on “getting into the community, walking the downtown area and having a strong presence with the business community and citizens.”

“We have a large senior population and we also want the police department to have a strong presence in the schools and with the youth,” Lutkus said. “He fits well into what we were looking for.”

Young was hired during the second recruitment process conducted by the town. An initial recruitment effort generated 25 candidates, but no agreement on salary and other contract provisions could be reached with the top candidate, Lutkus said in July.

The second round recruited 17 candidates, including Young — 11 either from or with some connection to Maine.

“They were very qualified people,” he said of the other candidates. “They just weren’t what we were looking for.”

Young will move to the Damariscotta area, as his contract requires he live within 20 miles of the town limits.

In March, former Damariscotta Police Chief Chad Andrews was demoted to deputy chief after what he said was participation in and and failure to “squash” sexual “banter and jokes” among male staff.
