ELLSWORTH, Maine — A Surry man charged with trafficking in cocaine was one of more than a dozen people indicted on Aug. 8 by a Hancock County grand jury.

Mark W. Briggs, 54, was arrested in March by members of the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency as a result of a months-long investigation, police have said. On Aug. 8, Briggs was indicted on charges of aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs, unlawful possession of scheduled drugs, violating conditions of release and criminal forfeiture. The aggravated trafficking charge is a Class A crime in Maine, punishable by up to 30 years in prison.

Acting on tips that Briggs allegedly had been selling cocaine in Hancock County, police stopped a 2007 Cadillac that Briggs was driving on March 31 on Route 1A in Ellsworth, the MDEA has indicated. In the vehicle, police found a vacuum-sealed container containing nearly half a pound, or approximately 200 grams, of cocaine, which was estimated to have a street value of $17,000, according to MDEA.

At Briggs’ home on Morgan Bay Road, which police subsequently searched after obtaining a warrant, officers found an additional 11 grams of cocaine, packaged for retail sale, and $10,000 in cash, MDEA has indicated.

After they received a tip, police had followed Briggs as he left Maine on March 30, allegedly to obtain cocaine for distribution in the Hancock County area. Officers continued to track him as he returned the next day before they stopped his vehicle in Ellsworth.
