Rev. George W. Hickey

HALLOWELL – Rev. George W. Hickey, 75, of this community, died Aug. 9, 2013, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Thayer Unit, Waterville, after a period of ill health. He was born March 23, 1938, in Augusta, son of George W. Hickey and Catherine G. (Faulkner) Hickey.
Father Hickey was a 1957 graduate of Cony High School of Augusta.
In 1964, Father Hickey entered St. Philip Neri School of Delayed Vocations in Boston. In 1965, he enrolled at St. Francis College in Biddeford where he graduated in 1969. He then entered St. Paul University and Seminary in Ottawa, Canada, where he was ordained deacon in 1971. Father George was ordained as a priest on June 28, 1973, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Augusta.
In 1999, Father Hickey celebrated his 25th anniversary as a priest followed by a sabbatical year of study, retreat and rest at the Vatican II institute, St. Patrick’s College in Menlo Park, California.
Upon his return to Maine, Father Hickey was made pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallowell where he was currently the pastor. This past June he celebrated his 40th anniversary as an ordained priest.
Father Hickey was predeceased by his parents; brother, Michael F. Hickey; sister, Roberta (Hickey) Burton; and by a beloved sister-in-law, Joanne (Keene) Hickey.
He is survived by three nephews; two nieces; several great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
There will be no public visiting hours. A Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Western Avenue, Augusta. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Manchester. Following the service, a reception will be held at the Sacred Heart Parish Hall in Hallowell.
