PORTLAND, Maine — The Maine Supreme Judicial Court on Tuesday announced its annual school visitation schedule. The court will convene at high schools in Orono, Newport and Cape Elizabeth on Oct. 7, 8 and 9 respectively.

Justices will hear oral arguments in three cases at each school, according to a press release issued Friday by Mary Ann Lynch, spokeswoman for the court system. Chief Justice Leigh I. Saufley announced in her annual State of the Judiciary address to the Legislature which schools would be visited but not the dates.

The cases that will be considered in October will be announced at a later date, according to Lynch. A hearing schedule and briefs will be posted on the court’s website, www.courts.state.me.us/maine_courts/supreme/oral_arguments.shtml.

“The court never tires of sharing a window into the judicial system for Maine’s high school students,” Saufley said in the release. “Every year, we are energized and encouraged by the interest and engagement we see from so many students, and their teachers, during these visits.

“It is a wonderful opportunity to educate the students and the public about the appellate process, and we very much appreciate the extra work taken on by the schools to create a courtroom and provide a serious forum for the court to carry out its business,” Saufley said.

Justices began their fall road trips in 2005 with a session at Caribou High School. Since 2006, the court has visited 25 schools and heard oral arguments in about 75 appeals before high school audiences. The justices convened at schools in Biddeford, Brunswick and Bucksport last year.
