Althea Irene Odell

ORONO – Althea Irene Odell died July 31, 2013, at the age of 91, at Dirigo Pines Retirement Community, Orono, where she spent her last five years. She fought cancer for quite some time, never changing her kind and loving spirit for which she is fondly remembered. She was born March 12, 1922, the only child of Raeburn and Irene Smith.
She graduated from Deering High School. Althea met David at Sargent College, where she earned her degree in Physical Therapy. He then went into the service and upon his return in 1948 they were married. Once retired, David and Althea split their time between a home in Florida in the winter and their home in Green Lake, which had been home for Althea’s parents as well. Eventually Green Lake became their year round residence. Althea loved the camp at Green Lake dearly. She was a member of First Congregational Church in Brewer and was active in King’s Daughters. Althea and David were world travelers, from Australia to Europe, including Russia and the Caribbean Islands. She enjoyed snorkeling and had collected seashells from beaches all over the world. She loved horses and rode a lot as a child. She had pets throughout most of her adult life and she was always friendly with those of her friends, relatives and neighbors. She just loved animals. She was also a master of crochet and knitting. Her fondest memories were at her home on Green Lake with family. Her son and daughter have been vacationing at Green Lake their whole lives, as have her grandchildren. To celebrate Althea’s life and legacy her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will continue to vacation at her beautiful home at Green Lake and carry on the traditions she instilled in her family.
She is survived by her son, Keith Odell; her granddaughters, Leslie Odell, Lauren Odell and Lindsay with her husband, Cory Pfeiffenberger; along with her daughter, Kathy and her husband, John Casto; and her grandsons, Phillip Odell and Wil Odell with his wife, Molly. Wil and Molly are expecting Althea’s first great-grandchild, baby Odell, in February 2014. She was predeceased by her husband, David Odell. They were married for 56 years.
Althea’s family will be holding a memorial service in her honor 1 p.m. Saturday, August 10, at Dirigo Pines Retirement Community. All who knew her are welcome.
