University of Maine women’s ice hockey coach Maria Lewis has established a Goal Light Fund drive to raise money for the program. She had a limited fund drive last year.

It is a pledge program in which each sponsor is asked to pledge at least $1 per goal scored this coming season.

“We’d like to get 300 pledges,” said Lewis. “Last year we scored 70 goals so if someone had pledged $1 per goal, it would have been a $70 donation to the program.”

Donors could also donate a flat rate in any amount of $100 or more.

Lewis said the program is in need of the funds.

“We need it big-time for everything from equipment to travel,” said Lewis. “This is a nice way for people to get involved with the program and help out without breaking the bank.”

She said she would also like to drum up more interest in her team.

“We want to get more people excited about our program. We’d like to grow our fan base. We have great kids who are great in the classroom, great in the community and great on the ice,” said Lewis, who is beginning her fourth year as the head coach. “They deserve it.”

There is no admission charge to Maine women’s hockey games.

The pledge would give the donor an option to either make it a tax-deductible donation or enter raffles that will be held several times throughout the season.

The raffle prizes include autographed game jerseys, team photos and hockey sticks and if they are successful in receiving enough pledges, the program will also raffle off a game day experience where someone would spend a period on the bench serving as an honorary coach.

The only stipulation would be that the honorary coach can’t be a recruitable student-athlete.

Lewis is in the process of distributing brochures which will include a pledge form.

Those interested can also contact Lewis via email at maria.lewis@maine.edu. Or they can check goblackbears.com for a link with the pledge form on it.

The Bears graduated leading scorer Brittany Dougherty, defenseman Chloe Tinkler and goalies Brittany Ott and Kylie Smith off last year’s 5-24-4 team (2-16-3 Hockey East), but everyone else is back. Plus, Lewis has added four forwards, three defensemen and a goalie.

Two years ago, they set a school record with 11 Hockey East wins (11-8-2) and tied a school record with 17 overall wins (17-11-6).

Husson soccer team in Europe

The Husson men’s soccer team is spending 11 days in Holland, Belgium and Germany from Aug. 1-11 as part of its preseason. Members of the team will be blogging about their experiences abroad, and they can be followed at http://eaglesmsoceurotrip.blogspot.com.

Husson head coach Jeff Gettler said “the opportunity to be over here and have the guys experience first hand the cultural, social, cuisine and language differences is integral to expanding their world view. The exposure to the history of Holland, Belgium and Germany gives us an even greater appreciation of Europe and the world.”

Run by Harvard Sports Management, the trip will feature four matches in which the Husson team will compete against European clubs. The team will also attend four professional teams games.

“From a soccer standpoint, the ability to play four high-level matches and see four top-level professional matches will serve to inspire and elevate their game anticipation of the upcoming 2013 season,” Gettler said.
