PALERMO, Maine — A local man has been charged with sexual abuse of a minor after a teenage girl’s mother complained to police that her daughter was being harassed by a neighbor.
The initial complaint was made to the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office the night of July 29, according to Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton. The mother said that neighbor Jason Baldwin, 38, was “obsessed with her daughter,” and was even banging on the windows trying to get the girl’s attention.
When deputies responded and talked to the teen, she told them that she had had a sexual relationship with Baldwin when she was 15. The age of consent in Maine is 16, Trafton said Monday.
When Detective Merl Reed interviewed Baldwin on Friday, Aug. 2, he told the Palermo man he was under arrest. Trafton said that Baldwin pulled away from Reed, ran inside his residence and locked the door. Reed called for backup, but the situation was resolved when Baldwin’s parents came to the house and talked him into surrendering to police, who also charged him with refusing to submit to arrest or detention.
Baldwin was taken to Waldo County Jail to be booked.
