CALAIS, Maine – A Calais man was in custody Monday following his arrest in a stabbing incident and a brief standoff with authorities, said Sgt. Christopher Donahue of the Calais Police Department.

Patrick Gleavey, 19, was held at the Washington County Jail in Machias on a charge of aggravated assault.

Police and ambulance personnel received a call for assistance at around 5:45 a.m. Sunday from a 23-year-old man who had been stabbed once in the leg and once in the hand, said Donahue. The victim, who was not identified, was transported to Calais Regional Hospital.

Police and Border Patrol agents went to Gleavey’s apartment on Main Street in connection with the alleged stabbing. Gleavey was seen inside the apartment, but he refused to come out and would not talk to officers via phone, said Donahue. After about 30 minutes, however, he exited the apartment voluntarily. He was placed under arrest without further incident.

After obtaining a warrant and gathering evidence, police searched the apartment, said Donahue, but he did not know whether the two men knew each other.
