GOULDSBORO, Maine — An elderly man is dead after going for a swim in Gouldsboro on Thursday, according to game wardens.

Cpl. John MacDonald of the Maine Warden Service said Friday Jon Webber, 82, had gone for a swim in Jones Pond after spending most of his Thursday working on firewood.

Webber’s home is located on the north end of Jones Pond, according to MacDonald.

Jones was found dead by his wife approximately 20 feet from shore, the corporal said.

MacDonald said it’s possible the man may have had a medical issue. His body has been taken to the medical examiner’s office in Augusta for an autopsy.

“We can’t assume that he drowned,” MacDonald said.

The incident remains under investigation, according to MacDonald. No foul play is suspected in Jones’ death.
