Man arrested after swimming across river to Maine in attempt to evade police

By Christina Higginbotham, Foster's Daily Democrat

SOMERSWORTH, N.H. — A city man who had an active warrant for burglary in Rochester, N.H., led police on a foot chase Tuesday afternoon that eventually ended in Maine after the suspect swam across a river to the neighboring state.

Four police units responded to the Hilltop area of the city at 4 p.m. after receiving a report that Arthur Christie was in the area.

Police say Christie led officers on a pursuit for several minutes. Christie eventually entered the Salmon Falls River then swam across to Berwick, Maine.

Somersworth and Berwick officers continued their search and eventually tracked Christie down.

Christie is being held at the York County Jail while he awaits a court hearing.

Police say he will face a fugitive from justice charge, two counts of resisting arrest, and the original charge of burglary.
