YORK, Maine — Two motorists from York were injured late Wednesday afternoon when their vehicles collided on Route 1, trapping one of them in the wreckage.
The accident happened at 4:23 p.m. near Lobster in the Rough, York police Sgt. Stephen Spofford said early Wednesday evening in a news release.
Gina-Marie Ambrosino, 44, was stopped on Route 1 waiting to make a left turn into the seafood eatery’s parking lot when her black 2006 Mercury Mountaineer was struck from behind by a silver 2001 Volvo driven by Brian Decato, 33.
Both vehicles were heavily damaged, Spofford said.
Members of the York Beach Fire Department used hydraulic extrication equipment to remove Decato from his vehicle. He was taken to Portsmouth Regional Hospital in New Hampshire. His medical condition was not immediately available Wednesday night.
Ambrosino was taken to York Hospital for treatment. She still was being evaluated about 8 p.m. Wednesday, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Both victims were taken to the hospital by York ambulances.
The York Police Department’s accident reconstruction team was called in to investigate the accident, which remains under investigation. Traffic was rerouted to allow the team to do its work, Spofford said.
Ogunquit police assisted with traffic control.
