WINDHAM, Maine — A police sergeant escaped injury Tuesday afternoon after a utility pole came crashing onto his sport utility vehicle.

Windham police Sgt. Jason Andrews was pulling out of a Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot at the beginning of his shift when the pole came down on his SUV, according to Sgt. Jim Boudreau.

The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m.

Fortunately for Andrews, the pole landed right on top of where the vehicle’s interior cage which separates the front and rear seats is located, Boudreau said.

“Had it not been for that, he would’ve been hurt badly,” Boudreau said.

Andrews walked away without a scratch and the police vehicle sustained minimal damage, according to Boudreau.

Boudreau said a tractor-trailer traveling along Route 302 struck wires that were holding up lane indicator signs, causing the pole to collapse.
