Varney Insurance Agency buys South Carolina company

BANGOR, Maine — The Varney Insurance Agency, based in Bangor, has acquired a company in South Carolina, which will expand for the first time Varney’s geographic footprint outside Maine.

Varney announced on Wednesday its acquisition of Santee Risk Managers, based in Santee, S.C., which specializes in insurance for the forestry industry and inland marine operations.

“Varney Agency has a proud history of servicing the hard-working people of Maine and throughout New England,” Tim Varney, CEO of the Varney Insurance Agency, said in a statement. “This acquisition expands the ability of our logging and forestry operations and puts us in position to provide even greater value to both small and large clients alike.”

In 2010, the Varney Agency launched the American Loggers Insurance Co. in collaboration with the Pelletier Brothers, stars of the Discovery Channel’s show “American Loggers,” to offer insurance to logging companies, and trucking and heavy equipment industries.

“Understanding and protecting the specific needs of those who work off the land is what we do well,” Varney said. “Adding more tools to our toolbox means helping more businesses lower their costs and stay competitive.”

Varney’s acquisition of Santee Risk Managers will be its 23rd location, and its first outside Maine.
