Maine Athletic Club basketball team splits two games at AAU nationals

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Maine Athletic Club 17-and-under boys basketball split its final two games of pool play AAU Division I 11th-grade national championship tournament Thursday.

MAC ended pool play with a 1-2 record, with the two losses coming by a combined six points, and plays again Friday morning in the single-elimination classic (consolation) bracket against the North Florida Phantoms.

Center Mike McDevitt of Greely High School in Cumberland Center scored 18 points and grabbed 15 rebounds during the morning session as coach Carl Parker’s club cruised past the Florida Highlanders 62-40.

Houlton’s Kyle Bouchard nearly contributed a triple-double to the Maine Athletic Club win, finishing with 10 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists, while Hampden’s Zach Gilpin had 10 points and six rebounds and Andrew Cartwright of Nokomis of Newport also scored 10 points.

Xavier Lewis of Bangor chipped in with six points, three rebounds and two assists for the winners, while Andrew Middleton of Edward Little of Auburn had five points and two rebounds and Justin Rogers of Falmouth had three points and three rebounds.

McDevitt scored six early points and Cartwright added a 3-pointer to lead Maine Athletic Club to a 12-8 first-quarter lead.

Maine Athletic Club led 27-20 at halftime, then used five Bouchard assists during a 16-6 run that stretched the advantage to 43-26 entering the final period.

In the afternoon game, Team Ohio of Cincinnati, Ohio, used an 18-3 third-quarter run to build an 18-point lead before holding on for a 62-58 victory over the Maine squad.

MAC used the 3-point shot to mount a late rally, with Bouchard, Rogers and Gilpin all connecting from long range during the fourth quarter. Gilpin’s second 3-pointer of the period closed the gap to 55-51 with 1:12 left in the game before Ohio made several late free throws to preserve the victory.

Gilpin finished the game with 14 points and five rebounds, while Bouchard had 12 points, five assists and four rebounds and McDevitt added 10 points and five rebounds.

Other MAC contributors were Cartwright (eight points, two rebounds), Middleton (two points, six rebounds), Rogers (six points) and Lewis (three points, two assists).
