Skowhegan wins again at Cal Ripken state tourney

SKOWHEGAN — The host Skowhegan all-stars and the Gorham I team each posted victories Wednesday during the Cal Ripken baseball 9U state championship tournament being held at the Carl Wright Complex.

Gorham I edged Andy Valley East 11-8, then Skowhegan registered a 12-9 win over the Gorham I contingent.

Gorham I 11, Andy Valley East 8

In the first game, Curran Bassingthwaite stroked a double to support the efforts of winning pitcher Kyle Skolfield in the Gorham I victory.

Dominic Garcia and Kyle Landry provided singles for the winners.

Ethan Cutler belted a home run and a single to pace Andy Valley East. Noah Pratt doubled and Hunter Gibson added a single.

Skowhegan 12, Gorham 1 9

In the second game, Marcus Hampton’s double and single helped Skowhegan prevail.

Simon Lewis gained the pitching win with a save from Brayden Bolduc. Matthew Chamberlain doubled for Skowhegan, while Seth Campbell and Bradyden Alward added singles.

Hunter Evans hit two singles to pace Gorham and Dylan Grayson chipped in with a single.

Baseball, 9-10

At Waldoboro, Windham advanced to the championship game of the Little League baseball ages 9-11 state tournament with a 12-3 win over Old Town.

Windham plays the winner of the Biddeford-Elliot Avenue (Lewiston) game, which was suspended in the fifth inning because of darkness with Biddeford leading 9-5, on Thursday at 5 p.m.

The Lewiston-Biddeford game resumes Thursday at 3 p.m.

In the first semifinal, Cameron Joyce, Caleb McCartney and Nolan Kent combined on a four-hitter with eight strikeouts to lead Windham.

McCartney stroked a home run and a double for the winners, while Quinton Hastings collected three singles. Brady Afthim added a double.

Zack Dill hit a triple for Old Town, while Joseph D’Angelo, Tanner Evans and Sam Martin singled.

Baseball, 11-12

State tournament

At Augusta, Bayside Little League of Portland and Saco will play in the championship game of the Little League baseball ages 11-12 tourney.

Saco advanced to the championship round Wednesday with a 15-3 win over Brewer. Bayside and Saco play Thursday at 6 p.m.
