Portland’s Lamour to box in Providence on Saturday night

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Portland boxer Russell Lamour is staying busy these days.

Eight nights after scoring a first-round knockout over Aquilano Brandao on the undercard of an ESPN 2 “Friday Night Fights” show at Rockingham Park in Salem, N.H., the Portland Boxing Club fighter will return to the ring Saurday night. He will face Joe Gardner in a scheduled six-round super middleweight bout on the undercard of Classic Entertainment & Sports’ “Game On” promotion at Twin River Casino.

The 37-year-old Gardner (11-6-1, 1 knockout) was supposed to fight Alexander Mancena, but Mancena had to drop out after suffering a broken nose last weekend.

Lamour, a 29-year-old native of Haiti, became available to replace Mancena after being untested in his bout last Friday night, when he knocked down Brandao three times before the fight was stopped at the 1:46 of the opening round.

Prior to making his professional debut in November, Lamour competed in the World Series of Boxing, an international competition for amateur fighters in which the participants fought on teams in five-round bouts without protective head or chest gear. Lamour finished 4-4 in that competition.

Lamour is now 4-0 with two knockouts as a pro, and will move up from his natural middleweight division to fight Gardner.

Saturday night’s main event will match Providence’s Vladine Biosse (15-2-1, 7 KOs) and Rich Gingras (13-3, 8 KOs) of Pawtucket, R.I., for Biosse’s New England super middleweight title.
